Based at Spektri Business Park, Dispelix develops optics for augmented reality devices. In just over a decade, the Finnish deep-tech company has grown into an international business employing around 100 specialists. Its new owner, AAC Technologies, is now supporting the next stage of growth.

Optics that should go unnoticed

Dispelix develops and supplies transparent optical displays known as waveguides. They allow digital images to appear in the wearer’s field of view—for example, through smart glasses—while the real world remains visible. At their best, these displays become such a natural part of the experience that the user hardly notices the technology itself.

According to Maija Puustinen, Chief Legal and Business Officer at Dispelix, the company’s display technology has applications beyond consumer smart glasses. Potential uses include industrial solutions, automotive head-up displays (HUDs), and helmets and visors used in defence applications.

Dispelix brings together expertise in optics and physics, software development, simulation, manufacturing methods and quality measurement. Research and development are central to its work, with artificial intelligence playing an increasingly important role.

Growth requires talent and the right environment

The company’s growth is particularly evident in its workforce. According to Puustinen, Dispelix employed about 20 people eight years ago; today, it has around 100. Approximately 20 new employees have joined in 2026 alone, and more than 20 nationalities are represented across the team. Many employees are physicists and other specialists in optics.

As the company has grown, its workspace requirements have evolved. Dispelix moved to Spektri in 2019, and its premises have adapted to different stages of the business. The location also supports product development: Micronova in Otaniemi, whose cleanrooms and research equipment Dispelix uses in developing its waveguides, is a short distance away.

Dispelix also has an office in Joensuu, where ties with the University of Eastern Finland and the region’s strong optics expertise support product development and recruitment.

A new owner supports the next stage

AAC Technologies became the owner of Dispelix in spring 2026. The international manufacturer of components and technology solutions had already been a strategic partner before the acquisition.

According to Puustinen, AAC brings manufacturing expertise and international networks to support Dispelix’s growth. This strengthens the company’s ability to scale Finnish-developed optics technology to higher production volumes and a wider range of applications.
