When Kuusakoski Oy’s headquarters transitioned to hybrid work, the staff’s space needs changed. For the third time, suitable rental office space was found at Spektri Business Park in Espoo.
When the 110-year-old family business Kuusakoski Oy decided to look for new headquarters, the solution was close by. Kuusakoski’s headquarters had already been located for years in Spektri Business Park in Tapiola, Espoo, and the move took place within the same business park—from the Kvartti building to the Duo building.
“Remote and hybrid work changed our needs, and our previous office no longer supported today’s work culture. However, we were so happy with Spektri that we chose to rent new office space there for the third time in a row,” says Laura Oksanen, Communications Manager at Kuusakoski.
Smarter Alternatives to Private Offices
Over 30 people work at Kuusakoski’s headquarters, which serves the company’s industrial recycling operations in Finland and abroad. The biggest change in the new office was the elimination of dedicated personal workstations.
The layout was designed together with Scope Design Oy, an interior architecture firm and long-standing partner of Spektri Business Park. Scope offers a wide range of services to tenants, from interior design to turnkey relocation support.
“Hybrid working and remote meetings were already familiar to Kuusakoski. Now, there was a specific need for spaces to focus, hold private discussions, or retreat for a moment without having to book a meeting room,” explains Jenni Kannisto, Lead Designer at Scope.
Based on these needs, the new headquarters includes four quiet rooms, three retreat spaces, and both bookable and freely available meeting rooms. Special attention was paid to the acoustics of open-plan work areas: ceiling-mounted acoustic panels, carpet tiles on the floor, and fabric-covered partitions between desks help reduce noise. Work zones were grouped into comfortably sized sections to support a calm working atmosphere.
A More Social and Comfortable Office
Although the headquarters downsized by over 100 square meters, the new 374 m² space feels more open and better utilized, according to Laura Oksanen.
“The floor plan physically brings us closer together. Previously we were isolated in long corridors, but now there’s a clear increase in community spirit,” Oksanen says.
A new kitchen-lounge area, named Tila and even given its own logo, contributes to this sense of community. It provides a space for informal conversations and interactions, without disrupting work in other areas.
The visual identity of the new space was also carefully considered: Kuusakoski’s blue brand color and logo were added to the lobby. A previously bright yellow floor was replaced with a more subtle version.
“It’s important for the space to reflect the idea of growth, and Spektri Business Park’s structure supports that. Good design ensures the premises truly serve their users,” says Jenni Kannisto.
Kuusakoski had already worked with Scope during its previous office move and was again very satisfied with the collaboration.
“Working with familiar people made the process smooth. We’ve now created a space that truly supports our work and culture. The staff’s feedback has been very positive,” Oksanen says.
